Mahurangi Technical Institute's specialised aquaculture research, production and education facility was opened in May 2007 by the Minister of Fisheries. (Click here for the Beehive article on eel farming and the opening of the facitlity). In this world-class facility, research is conducted on a number of fish species including endangered native fish as part of their preparation for reintroduction into the natural environment. As well as conducting ground-breaking research into the breeding of NZ Short Finned Eels, juvenile fish are also produced for use by fish farmers in NZ and overseas for growing on to market size.
Our Aquaculture courses are taught in classrooms within our research facilities allowing students to gain a full understanding by applying their theoretical studies to practical aquaculture. MTI is the only Ministry of Fisheries licenced fish farm combining research and innovation with aquaculture education.
